Dealing with Legacy Chemicals

Learn why legacy chemicals are a threat to our water systems.

The invisible invaders

The ongoing battle for Guam's safe water.

The Villains We Can’t See

Some chemicals never break down. Scientists call them forever chemicals because once they enter soil or water, they can stay for decades—silently moving through rivers, streams, and drinking water.

Legacy Trouble: Dieldrin & Friends

Years ago, farmers and pest control crews used a pesticide called dieldrin. It fought bugs—but left a toxic mark that still hides underground today. Dieldrin is considered a "Legacy Chemical" as it does eventually break down unlike "Forever Chemicals" which are in a category all by itself.

Although DDT and Dieldrin are different types of chemicals, they are both persistent organic pollutants, meaning they do not easily break down in the environment and can accumulate in the food chain. DDT and dieldrin were common chemical treatments for insects worldwide from the 1950's-1970's. Both have been restricted or banned in many parts of the world due to their environmental and health concerns.

Today, both products are banned in developed countries as scientists learn more about its dangers in our environment. More importantly, we now have technology to successfully remove the chemical from life essential items such as our drinking water. GWA is currently installing such technology to fully comply with recent guidance provided by governing bodies that oversee environmental issues.

A Global Enemy

This isn’t just Guam’s fight. Forever and Legacy chemicals are found around the world—from icy Arctic lakes to big city rivers. They ride wind, rain, and ocean currents, touching millions of people and animals.

Why They’re Dangerous

Over a lifetime, exposure to these chemicals in certain amounts may have adverse health effects.  Scientists link them to an increased risk of cancer, hormone changes and weaker immune systems.

Think of them as silent invaders – hard to see, but always changing and evolving

GWA Guardians and Warriors of Our Island's Water

Guam Waterworks Authority (GWA) is on constant watch. Our mission is clear: protect every drop of drinking water from these chemical villains. To help us do this, GWA works with other guardians such as Guam EPA (GEPA) and many other government agency partners.

Our Weapons Against Harmful Contaminants

  • Advanced Filters – Powerful and effective carbon filters and membrane filters trap dangerous organisms and chemicals before water reaches you.

  • Vigilant Testing – GWA scientists sample and test water year round to keep your water safe and identify any threats.

  • Production Upgrades – GWA is investing in upgrading wells, new water treatment systems, and better monitoring and control equipment to block these silent invaders.

The Ongoing Battle

This fight isn’t over. Legacy Chemicals last a long time (Forever Chemicals even longer), but GWA keeps upgrading technology, teaming with scientists, and staying one step ahead to keep your water safe.

Join the Defense

  • Stay Informed: Read GWA water reports and updates.

  • Dispose Safely: Never pour chemicals, oils, or unused pesticides into drains or on the ground.

  • Spread the Word: Share information on this site or point them our way.

  • Stop Illegal Dumping: Keep dangerous chemicals and other wastes out of our environment and away from our precious aquifer!

Together, We Win the Battle

The mention of the word "Forever or Legacy Chemicals" in our water system is scary — GWA is on it. Regardless of the origins of its use on Guam (when, where and who), the primary mission for GWA is the same — to protect our water source and deliver safe water to our customers.

The men and women of GWA stands guard so every sip stays clean, fresh, and safe. But it's a long battle - GWA will prevail with your patience and support. Keeping our water sources safe for current and future generations mean everything to us. GWA will not fail you. With your help, we will win the battles together.
