(Mangilao, GU) Guam Waterworks Authority (GWA) continues prioritizing immediate and long-term treatment solutions for the Y-15 well in Yigo, which has shown elevated levels of dieldrin, a pesticide. GWA has been working on the immediate issues at Y-15 but continues to work proactively on protecting all of GWA’s water sources. Dieldrin was used worldwide as a pesticide throughout the 1950s to 1970s. And while the pesticide was fully banned in the U.S. since 1987 and remains federally unregulated, this legacy contaminant remains in our soil and groundwater. “Clean, safe water distribution is our daily priority. GWA continues to implement long-term solutions to manage not only dieldrin, but other emerging contaminants that may threaten our water sources. We are focused in solving the issues at Y-15 well in Yigo and remain diligent and defensive for all wells throughout our systems,” said GWA General Manager Miguel C. Bordallo. Granular activated carbon (GAC) filtration is a highly effective treatment process to remove dieldrin and other contaminants from drinking water, and GWA began the design and procurement process to implement a permanent treatment process at the Y-15 well in 2023. GWA issued change directives to contractors for an interim treatment solution to prioritize Y-15 treatment while GWA’s long-term treatment system is constructed. The site is currently undergoing urgent preparations necessary to install the interim GAC vessels, scheduled for Sept. 29. After installation of the GAC system, GWA will closely monitor and test to confirm treatment effectiveness and ensure continued performance. This interim treatment system is scheduled to be online by mid-October, and a more detailed timeline of activity is outlined in the table below. The permanent treatment system is projected for completion by the summer of 2026.
